We R.E.A.D.

Everyone knows the three “R’s” in education…reading, writing and arithmetic.  Wait…they call it the three “R’s” but only one of them is actually an “R”.  What a coincident that “reading” is the only one with an “R”.  Hmmm…so reading IS important…maybe the most important of the three “R’s” (even though only one of them is an “R”)!  Oh goodness, here we go again…

The National Report Card

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institute for Literacy:

• More than 20 percent of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level, which is far below the level needed to earn a living wage.
• Approximately 50 percent of the nation’s unemployed youth age 16-21 are functional illiterate, with virtually no prospects of obtaining good jobs.

• 21 million Americans can’t read at all, 45 million are marginally illiterate and one-fifth of high school graduates can’t read their diplomas.

• Children who have not developed some basic literacy skills by the time they enter school are 3 – 4 times more likely to drop out in later years.
